The Compassionate Rebellion
A call to transform conflict into connection and anger into meaningful action. An invitation to all who wish to build a future rooted in empathy, courage, and hope.
Introduction to The Compassionate Rebellion
In recent months, I have found myself grappling with an inner conflict I can no longer ignore. It has become clear to me that a profound divide runs through our society, touching nearly every aspect of our lives. While I remain open to the complexity of different viewpoints, I cannot deny that much of what I see unfolding stands in direct opposition to my moral compass.
The tension between my values and the world around me has stirred deep emotions—anger, hopelessness, helplessness, and uncertainty. These feelings, though painful, are also valuable. They are signals, urging a deeper reckoning within myself. Yet amid this emotional storm, a single question emerged: How can I—and how can we—transform these energies into something constructive, courageous, and meaningful?
Anger has its place, and emotion matters deeply. But when emotion dominates without direction, it becomes impulsive, reactive, and ultimately destructive. I realized that to move forward with integrity, I needed to harness these powerful forces for good. From that realization, The Compassionate Rebellion was born.
A Vision Rooted in Compassion
The Compassionate Rebellion is grounded in a simple but radical idea: that we can respond to conflict, injustice, and division not with more hatred or fear, but with fierce, principled compassion.
As a therapist, I witness how personal and internal conflicts often mirror the broader struggles playing out across our society. I believe we need a new kind of compass—one shaped by psychology, neuroscience, sociology, philosophy, and the full range of human wisdom—to help us navigate these challenges with integrity.
What if we applied what we know about healing, growth, and connection to our political and cultural lives?
What if we gathered people from all disciplines, all walks of life, and all sides of the political spectrum to build a forum for meaningful dialogue and creative action?
That is the invitation at the heart of The Compassionate Rebellion: To come together—not in perfect agreement—but in shared commitment to empathy, integrity, and the possibility of a more harmonious future.
What Is The Compassionate Rebellion?
The Compassionate Rebellion is a values-based movement committed to fostering a more inclusive, thoughtful, and connected world. It calls upon professionals from all disciplines to apply their wisdom and experience in service of community healing, social equity, and the dismantling of harmful systems.
Core Values and Principles
Informed by Critical Thinking: We prioritize evidence-based reasoning, curiosity, and intellectual humility over dogma or reactionary thinking.
Resistance to Manipulation: We seek to identify and dissolve manipulative rhetoric, propaganda, and fear-based messaging—wherever it arises.
Psychologically & Neurologically Aware: We acknowledge the impact of trauma, conditioning, and mental health on human behavior. We advocate for compassionate, science-informed understanding.
Compassion Over Contempt: Anger may arise, but our response is guided by care. We speak and act from a place of calm, kindness, and respect.
Emotional Regulation & Humility: We take responsibility for our emotional responses, communicate mindfully, and stay open to growth and feedback.
Kindness Toward “Enemies”: We see adversaries not as villains but as people shaped by pain, ignorance, or isolation. Compassion does not mean condoning—but it does mean humanizing.
Naming Harm with Clarity: We recognize that hatred, misogyny, bigotry, racism, and other exclusionary beliefs often stem from unaddressed pain and a lack of transformative education.
Listening to All Sides—with Discernment: We make space to understand diverse perspectives while also discerning when to set boundaries with toxic or polarizing media.
Inspired by Compassion Itself: As the Dalai Lama teaches: “Compassion is the wish to see others free from suffering.” This is the foundation from which we rebel.
Next Steps
The goal of this project is to develop community and support the education and growth of all who engage. To that end, there are many possible ways we can move forward together.
First, we will form a group that meets at least monthly to collaborate and define actionable goals that advance the mission of the Compassionate Rebellion. If you would like to be part of this group, please email dafostherapy@gmail.com with the subject line: Compassionate Rebellion, or respond to the form at the bottom of this page. We would love for you to join us!
Second, I will periodically post blog updates (guest contributions are welcome, provided they align with our values and criteria). These posts will highlight resources, reflections, and community-based activities that support the collective aims of the Compassionate Rebellion. Our focus will remain on fostering connection and promoting compassionate, ethically grounded thinking.
I believe that together, we can make a meaningful difference in our communities. And I believe that inaction is no longer an option. Whatever your political perspective, I hope we can agree on some shared values—and at the very least, engage in respectful, rational dialogue where we differ.
Let’s come together and be the change we wish to see in the world.
